Lucid Dreaming Basics For Anyone

Lucid Dreaming  – What is a Lucid Dream?

During most dreams, sleepers are not aware that they are dreaming. A lucid dream differs from the regular dreaming state, but is recognized as a lucid dream in the way that the dreamer perceives it. A lucid dreaming experience is defined as a dream in which the dreamer is aware that they are in the dream. The lucid dream is generally more vivid, active and seems real to the dreamer. The lucid dreamer is usually able to participate actively in the dream and have interactions within the dreaming state with other things in the dream. The lucid dreamer can perceive the dreaming environment as a reality and have direct interaction with the imaginary aspects, objects or other beings in the dreaming environment. Often the lucid dreamer can manipulate things within the environment actively and usually the lucid dreamer is able to remember their dreams in such states.

Lucid dreaming may have influence and accelerate the conscious mind by mental suggestion. The lucid consciousness is more receptive to affirmations and has the ability to make mental shifts that can accelerate the learning process of the human mind. The lucid dreaming state has been well documented and established to exist scientifically. In most research there are two types of lucid dream states that are defined as dream initiated or wake initiated lucid dreams.

Lucid Dreaming – Dream Initiated Lucid Dreams

A DILD or dream initiated lucid dream is the most common way that individuals enter into a lucid dreaming state. The dream starts like any normal dream and the dreamer is unconscious or sleeping. As the dream progresses the dreamer comes to an awareness that they are in a dream, concludes that they are in a dream consciously and then the awakened or lucid dreaming state begins. Generally someone in the state enters into REM or Rapid Eye Movement as part of the lucid activity.

Wake Initiated Lucid Dreams

A WILD or wake initiated lucid dream is the less common way that individuals enter into a lucid dreaming state. The dream does not occur under normal sleeping or unconscious circumstances, but rather the dreamer goes from being in a normal waking state and falls into a dream state. They do not usually know that they have made this shift in waking consciousness until they are fully into the lucid dreaming state. At some point the dreamer does be come aware of their lucid dream or may be in a waking state the entire dream, but not realize it until they come out of the dream state directly.

This is a little like day dreaming or psychedelic hallucinations, but is much more real to the dreamer. Also the associated REM state is very active and not at normally acceptable levels. The same type of state can be achieve through use of drug induced states with compounds like DMT.

Other Types of Dream Phenomena

Some other types of dreaming phenomena that are associated or confused with lucid dreaming. Rapid eye movement or REM is associated with lucid dreaming, because this usually happens as part of the lucid dreaming state. Other physical phenomena such as false awakening in dreaming or sleep paralysis are sometimes associated with lucid dreaming, but there is no direct connection to these physical phenomena and lucid dreaming.

Out-of-body experience and astral projection are both experiences that have been associated with lucid dreaming. There is some confusion about this although, because both may occur when in a lucid dreaming state. Both may also occur without being part of a lucid dreaming state, so the association is relative and neither one is directly correlated to lucid dreaming. Another confusion is that these two experience are the same phenomena, which they are not.

Lucid dreaming can be achieved through a combination of meditation and self hypnosis by some individuals. This is done by putting the body and mind into a receptive state before drifting into sleeping or falling into REM state. This technique has different levels of success depending upon the individual and the environment where it is attempted in. Lucid dreaming is still being researched and studied by many people worldwide. It may one day be one of the most important fields of study in the future of psychology and metaphysics.
